If you are considering buying an electric car/vehicle (EV), or perhaps have already bought one and are in doubt about which charging cable and charging plug it might have, fear not. Although there are five different types of plugs, things are fortunately made quite simple when we talk about charging cables for electric cars in 2023. Virtually all new electric cars and plug-in hybrids use the plug called Type 2. This plug must be used both from cable to charging stand and car, or as a separate loose charging cable for electric car or plug-in hybrid to take with you.
Charging cable Type 2 makes it possible to charge with both AC and DC at up to 22 kW and 50 kW respectively. Whereas plug-in hybrid cars only have the Type 2 plug, virtually all charging plugs for electric cars further support the development of Type 2, which is called CCS-Combo. This plug uses the Type 2 plug, but with the addition of two additional pins at the bottom, for fast charging via DC, which is what is used when you charge out of town on fast chargers - and therefore not at home. Cables with the CCS-Combo plug cannot be bought separately or for use in the home, here it is, the normal Type 2 plug that is used as the only one.
