JBL was founded by James B. Lansing (hence the name JBL) in 1946. The company, based in Northridge California, has been engaged continuously in speaker production.
In 1969, JBL was acquired by Jervis Corporation, which today is called Harman International. They, therefore, belong within the same umbrella as Harman Kardon, AKG, BSS, Crown, DBX, Lexicon, Soundcraft, and Studer.
