A subwoofer can help support a pair of smaller speakers so that you get good bass and sound quality across the entire frequency range.

For film sound and in a home cinema, a subwoofer is almost indispensable, as it provides depth and the necessary power to match the big picture and the good surround sound. Without a subwoofer, a film can sound a little flat, as the soundtrack is actually designed for having a subwoofer.
