Rega's research has debunked myths and enabled the delivery of world-class sound quality at reasonable prices. The speaker market, however, is different, being driven by scientific and technical expertise, resulting in numerous competitors. Many speakers’ success depends on massive marketing and advertising budgets – something Rega does not invest in. Instead, Rega focuses all its resources on research and development, resulting in unique cabinet designs and Rega’s own tweeter and bass/midrange drivers with a four-layer voice coil. Rega even manufactures and winds the parts for their crossovers in-house. Why Phenolic Resin? Historically, speakers have been made with rectangular wooden cabinets to fit home furnishings. Since the 1990s, many European manufacturers have had to choose between producing in the Far East or charging high prices for locally made wooden cabinets. In recent years, however, the market has become more open to modern materials and forms. While plastic cabinets were previously used primarily for small or portable speakers, a new acceptance of functional designs has allowed Rega to realize a long-standing dream. Rega has invested in molding rigid thermoset phenolic resin in collaboration with a UK company. The natural rigidity of phenolic resin, reinforced with ceramic plates and a complex bracing structure, has resulted in unique cabinets that can be produced at one-third the cost of other UK-made speakers.
